BOM software for manufacturers: the short answer

BOM software stores the full recipe for each product: raw materials, sub-assemblies and quantities, level by level. For an Indian manufacturer, the useful kind links that BOM to stock, purchase and production. Then an order tells you what raw material to buy and when. Engineering BOM tools built around CAD suit design teams. Most small and mid-size factories need a production BOM inside their operations software.

Engineering BOM tools vs production BOM software

An engineering BOM (EBOM) comes from design, with CAD files and revisions. A manufacturing BOM (MBOM) is what the shop floor builds and purchase buys.

The three general BOM types are engineering, manufacturing and service. Each can be single-level or multi-level. SAP has its own BOM categories; ask your SAP partner for the list.

BOM in software: A software bill of materials (SBOM) lists code components; it is a different thing.

When an Excel BOM is enough, and when it breaks

BOM stands for bill of materials. Excel works for a few products with single-level BOMs. Start with our free bill of materials format.

Excel breaks with sub-assemblies, many variants and parts shared across products. It breaks hardest when purchase needs a buying list from orders.

7 checks before you buy BOM software

1. Multi-level BOM. Can a sub-assembly's BOM sit inside the finished product's BOM?

2. BOM to raw-material plan. Orders should turn into a material list across every BOM level, net of stock. See our MRP software buying guide.

3. Stock by store. Raw material often sits in several stores or godowns.

4. Sub-contracting and job work. Material at a job worker is still yours. See our subcontracting guide.

5. Production costing from the BOM. Material cost should roll up level by level.

6. Tally or accounting fit. Does it keep Tally for accounts, or replace it?

7. Users, real price and go-live time. Add up users, setup and hosting. Ask for a go-live timeline.

TallyPrime (BOM in stock items)

One stock item can have several BoMs. The Manufacturing Journal records components used, plus by-product, co-product and scrap.

BUSY Standard

Fits firms already on BUSY. Standard lists "BOM / Production Planning" at ₹16,500 perpetual, excl. GST (checked 16 Oct). Job-work is only "upcoming", on POWER/POWER+. Ask about multi-level BOMs.

Zoho Inventory

Zoho's own FAQ says it is "yet to support manufacturing modules". It suggests composite items to bundle raw materials and labour cost into kits. See TranZact vs Zoho Inventory.

Odoo Manufacturing

In Odoo's multilevel BoM, sublevel products must be fully made before the top level starts. The list price read ₹760 per user a month on 16 Oct; implementation is extra. Compare Odoo alternatives.

ERPNext

ERPNext lists a BOM Browser for sub-assemblies and job cards for each work order. It is open source (GPL-3.0); hosting and setup cost extra. See TranZact vs ERPNext.

Katana

Fits makers with few SKUs. It lists multi-level BOMs with subassemblies; Free allows up to 30 SKUs (checked 16 Oct). Its page names QuickBooks Online and Xero, not Tally.

OpenBOM

An engineering BOM tool for design teams. Professional Team is $30 per seat a month, billed yearly; revision control starts on Company at $90 (checked 16 Oct).
