Every factory does material handling whether or not anyone calls it that. The difference between an efficient operation and a costly one usually comes down to whether the movement of material was actually designed, or just happened.

Material handling covers every movement of raw material, work-in-progress, and finished goods between the point they arrive and the point they leave, including loading, unloading, transporting, storing, and packaging.
It ranges from a worker manually carrying a component between two workstations to a fully automated conveyor and storage system moving thousands of units a day. The method changes, the underlying goal does not: get material where it needs to be, undamaged, on time, at the lowest reasonable cost.

How to Choose the Right Material Handling Approach
There is no single correct answer, but four practices help most Indian SME manufacturers choose well.
Match the method to your volume, not your budget alone. Buying automation for low, irregular volume wastes capital; running high volume by hand wastes labor and time.
Design the layout before buying equipment. Material handling equipment only pays off when the floor layout minimizes travel distance and unnecessary handling steps.
Track movement, not just storage. Knowing where material sits does not help if you cannot see it moving between stages, in, on the floor, and out.
Plan for growth in stages. Mechanize the highest-volume, most repetitive movement first, and add automation incrementally as volume justifies it.
Where Material Handling Goes Wrong
Material handling fails in predictable ways, and most of them trace back to layout or visibility, not the equipment itself.
Poor layout forces unnecessary movement. Material crossing the floor multiple times between stages adds cost and damage risk with no value gained.
No system tracking movement between stages. Material logged only at intake and dispatch leaves a blind spot for anything lost or misplaced in between.
Equipment mismatched to the load. Using a hand trolley for loads that need a forklift, or the reverse, slows the floor and increases injury risk.
Congestion at chokepoints. A single loading dock or narrow aisle becomes the bottleneck for the entire material flow, regardless of how efficient each individual step is.
Manual handling without training. Most material handling injuries come from improper lifting or unfamiliarity with equipment, not the equipment itself.
